March 18, 1930 - June 19, 2004



Frederick C. Hartstein, age 74, a 35-year resident of Bossier City, entered eternal rest early last Saturday morning, June 19, 2004 following a 10-month battle with multiple myeloma cancer. Services will be held Wednesday, June 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 8895 Youree Drive, Shreveport, LA. Friends will be welcomed at Boone Funeral Home on Airline Drive in Bossier City from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, June 22. He will be interred at Allegheny County Memorial Park in Pittsburgh, PA. with full military honors.

 

“Grandpa Fred”, as he was known to the youth of Holy Trinity Church and Camp Briarwood in Argyle, TX, was born March 18, 1930 in Monesson, PA. He served 31-1/2 years in the Navy Reserve, the Marines and United States Air Force. He was a pilot in the Air Force, flying the KC-97, KC-135 and HH-53 (Jolly Green) helicopters. He served in Korea at the Inchan Landing and was trapped in the Chosen Reservoir at a very young age. He also served in Vietnam as a rescue pilot in HH-53 helicopters. His medals include 3 DFCs, the Purple Heart and 5 Air Medals.

 

Fred was preceded in death by his father George Crawford Hartstein and mother Alice Hartstein Cornelius. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruth Schodde Hartstein, three sons, all graduates of Parkway High School, and their wives, Keith and Sarah of Boston, Roy and Dana of Houston, and Kirk and Chrisy of Austin. His is also survived by 8 grandchildren of whom he was very proud; Rebecca, Rachel and Amy, and the boys Kevin, Taylor, Brett, Kennon and Nathan.

 

Fred was a charter member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, served on the NTNL Synod Council of the ELCA, on the board of the Retired Officers Assn., and was a member of the Bossier Sheriff’s Posse. He was an avid golfer, hiker and outdoorsman who took particular pleasure in working with children. A former Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 220 in Bossier City, he later served as “Camp Grandpa” at Briarwood Camp, and also worked with several Bossier Parish schools where he counseled children about the importance of getting an education.

 

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Briarwood Camp, c/o Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 8895 Youree Drive, Shreveport, LA 71115.
