Green Hornet

Air Force Advisory Team #4 patch

Bill Dye at Hurlburt Fld., FL Testing 40 mm cannon for UH-1N. Constant jams when firing, worked good in open area. Detonated too soon when firing into trees. Would never be suitable in double or triple canopy jungle, therefore test results were reviewed and weapons were sent to the 20th SOS in Vietnam.

Plaque that hung on 20th SOS Orderly Room wall at Nha Trang, AB, RVN. AK-47 and names of air crews lost. I understand this was on display at Bell Helicopter Hq's. at Ft. Worth, TX for a while after 1973.

The first photo is of SSgt. Bill Dye Sr. standing next to UH-1P, 65-7925, at Nha Trang AB, RVN in 1969. This same helicopter, UH-1P, 65-7925 now resides in The Museum of Aviation at Robins AFB, Warner-Robins, GA. Bill made a visit to the museum in April of 2012 where the other five photos were taken. He is shown demonstrating the gunner position while firing the mini-gun to the assistant curator of the museum.  Their display had a mannequin sitting on the floor looking thru the sight. The curator was surprised at how you had to stand and maneuver  around to operate the mini-gun effectively.
