Just cleaning out the attic and remembering the "good ole days." Was in 40ARRS at NKP. Somehow I "acquired" a H-43 Flight Crew Checklist (I am a H53 guy) issued to Baumgartier, an FM. It is difficult to read the name/date, but the manuals control # is 13. If someone wants/needs it, contact me.

First of all, Thank you all for your service and sacrifice. My father is retired Air Force mechanic and worked on the Sikorsky H-19 for the 1st TransAtlantic Helicopter Flight. He is still a mechanic and loving retirement but misses it tremendously as he was in the airforce for over 25 yrs. I dont think I have ever asked him that question. Nonetheless, I am in receipt of some very awsome photographs and documents I believe should be preserved along with the signatures of the men on those first flights and the Saturday Evening Post article. My respect to all of you. Sincerely, Mrs Linda Goller

My husband Frank Zurawski is on your Final Flight page. Being in that helicopter meant the world to him and I totally understood it when we spouses were allowed to take a trip up in that H-60. What a thrill. Just wanted to say thankyou for providing this site a way of seeing other people who wanted what he wanted. I knew some others besides his crew that had taken final flights and was sad to learn that. May they all rest in heaven. I read a quote from Harry Reasoner something about helicopter people being extroverts. I think it's definitely true as it takes a lot of guts to get on a helicopter let alone fly in one on a daily basis. You all are my heroes. Thank you for the freedoms you have given me and this melting pot called the United States of America. Freedom isn't free. But we are free because of individuals like yourselves who give up your freedom for a time or forever. Land of the free because of the brave. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart.

I served in the U. S. Air Force from 1970 to 1974. I graduated from Helicopter Mechanic Training at Sheppard AFB, Texas in August 1970. In Sep 1970, I was deployed to Det 8, 38th ARRS, Cam Rahn Bay, South Viet Nam and then shortly thereafter, I was transferred to Nakom Phanom, Thailand. I completed my tour one year later and was redeployed back to the U.S. in Sep 1971. I am hoping to find any of my fellow airmen who may remember me or served at the same time I did. Thanks.

The quote on your home page can be accredited to Larry Trimble, Jim Lamotte and Ricardo Davis who were members of the 5th Special Forces Group (MACVSOG) in Vietnam. These incredible men and their fellow Green Berets performed feats of unmatched daring and bravery that in some cases are still classified. Their AO (Aera of Operation) was Laos and Cambodia. They composed this quote while sitting in the Bamboo Lounge during stand-down between missions. Just thought I'd let you know. God bless our veterans. Freedom is not free.

Hello, the quote on your homepage wall was actually created by my Grandfather, Oren Hanbaum. He is a deceased POW MIA veteran of the Korean war. We have a hard copy in a picture frame of the quote. His son and grandson also served in Korea, 3 Generations worth. He was a National DAV Officer. He was well respected by all. Every month he attended and participated in a Purple Heart breakfast, since he was a Purple heart reciptant. Every year he attened his POW reunion. My Grandfather was well respected by his peers and a tiny bit of patriotism went with him the day he passed away.

Hello Rotorheads,

I was a PJ from 1967-71 in the regular USAF, and a Reserve PJ from 1972-1977. I was on the crew of one of the two HC-130s that refueled these two helicopters in 1970 that made the first Trons-Pacific flight of helicopters, and I took about a ½ hour reel of Super-8 movie film of this flight. I’m wondering if you or the U.S. Air Force Museum would be interested in this film?

John

My Husband Thomas E. Heitz CMSgt. served our country for 26 years. I lost him 12/09/09. He knew many of the members of Roterheads and loved the site too! He served in Viet Nam and NKP in 1972-73. He was a wonderful husband and a man that anyone would be proud to know. He worked with the HH-53's and loved it! He is missed by so many. Thanks for the recognition from Rotorheads.

I was AF from '62-'82. Retirwed at MAC headquaters at Sott AFB. During 1967-68 I was stationed at Udorn, Thjailand. Whilke there primary job was aircraft hyraulics- did spend a short time detailed to transient alert.

My question is can any of the members help me locate/find out where Lima Site 36 (LS36) was in Laos? I went to a site where we landed going uphill and took-off going downhill. I would go on missions to recover battle damaged A1E's.

Never knew where I was but a source on the Udorn history site thinks it was LS36. Appreciate any help. Also thanks ever so much for your lovely helos. I got a wild ride out of Laos on one ocassion. Remember, anyone can fly- to hover is divine.

John Moody

My heartfelt thanks to Roterheads for allowing my late Husband's(CMS Thomas Heitz) obituary to be placed on your site. Thanks Vince for all your work in keeping it going too. I love to visit the site and enjoy the wonderful memories it brings of the 26 years Tom and I spent in the military together!
Guys, I have collected patches since I was 6 and I am 67 now, In fact, now, I have a small business buying and selling patches to collectors. Check my website for texcentrading co, if interested or email me at emilb@earthlink.net. Be sure to put "patches" somehow in the subject line so I know I want to read it. Otherwise, you will join all of the Canadian meds stuff I get. Got a bunch you are stuck with and want to sell, let me know. Do you remember the place that made your patches, please write to tell me, they likely made others and I may be able to pick up some for our buddies. All the best.
Emil

My uncle passed away last weekend. It wasn't until reading his obituary in the paper that I learned of his piloting one of the two H-19A's in the first trans Atlantic crossing in 1952 as noted in this website.

Lt. Howard Moore (Uncle Howell)

[Tried to include the URL but was not allowed though it's at rotorheadsrus.us slash documents slash 221.html]

All those times when our families got together summer after summer and I never heard about this. I was in the 5th grade when he retired from the Air Force in 1975.

If anyone has any photos or additional stories about him or his craft, I would be incredibly thankful if you could send them my way.

His obituary can be found at the Shreveport Times (unfortunately URL not allowed)

Greetings All, I just found the site. I have an "original" of that historical report, I think I typed it. Served with the 58th from Oct 1969 till the unit was de-activated after the coup. Ive been in contact with a few former members including Stephen Brodsky, Vince Deets, Bob Michelson. I've tried to get in contact with CO William (Wild Bill) Lyell, he's down in Texas "pickin and grinen" with country fidlers, last I've read. I sent Bob Michelson a bunch of photos last year, that in-flight refueling (HH-3E/HC-130) may have been one of mine. I have lots more photos which I would be happy to supply to the site if someone will tell me where to send them. I'd be happy to hear from anyone, especially John Paton or Joe Brochu. I'd love to see a reunion happen.

Best to all and Happy New Year

Howard Sandroff
sndf@uchicago.edu

I'm in the process of getting my bio together and will submit it by mail within the next few weeks. I will certainly visit this site often in the future.

My dad, SMS Porter C. Myers, was First Sergeant with the 21st at NKP in 67-68. When he passed away in 2003, I was able to communicate with Col. Harry Hauser and Jim Henthorn, and am so grateful for the kind words and stories they had to share. I am now in possession of Daddy's personal items and have many photos of his time at NKP that I would like to share with this website, or any interested members of his former squadron.

I just wanted to inform all that my dad, Al Corson that after a short battle with cancer, has passed away. He was aircraft commander on Knife 31 which was shot down on Koh Tang East Beach and was featured on the Discovery Channel "Situation Critical, Seized at Sea"
Burial will be at Arlington, August 27th at 3PM.
I would like to invite everyone to come to Dad's funeral. This is not going to be a private service. I thank you for your condolences during this time. They are much appreciated. Please wear something that is colorful as well as comfortable, for Dad was a very fun loving guy and would not want to see everyone wearing black. I will be wearing the 21st SOS Knife patch to show my respect for everyone involved in that 1975 mission.

I am also planning on visiting Lt. Van de Geer's gravesite and the Vietnam Wall after the funeral should anyone like to join me.

Retired 20 years USAF in 1982. My father (Glenn Marks, LtCol, USAF) was a rotorhead, though, 20 years also (retired 1974). He flew HH43s and was stationed at Frobisher, Bangor (ME), Peru (IN), Clark (PI), Thailand (can't remember...Ubon?). His love for aircraft got me interested. He passed away from brain tumor in 2004. Thanks for this great site.

Ireceived a phone call from Carol informing me of Jim Moore's passing on Sun. June 28 ,tonight 7/3 i was sitting on my deck watching the fireworks a chopper flew over & my thoughts immediately went to Jim . We first met at Stead AFB in early 1962 Jim was on the H-19 flt line & I was on the H-43 flt line so we didn't hook up much. In 1964 we both ended up at WPAFB, both being low rank & just starting our families we became good friends . We would get together at one another's house have dinner & play cards. In 1965 I left the AF & Jim continued his career in the AF we we got together a couple of times & Jim & Carol spent a couple of days with us when he came back from NKP.We lost track of one another until 2007 when another rotorhead Don Hoge found the Rotorheads RUS website & got in touch with Jim & gave him my phone #. Jim gave me a call & invited us to come visit them, we were able to get together in June 2007 & had a wonderful weekend with them .We got together a couple of times after that & right before before Xmas 2008 Ron Feight ,Dick Kenuzli & myself & our wives got together at Jim & Carol's for dinner and a day of remembrance Jim I still don't remember what we were doing with that gal of yellow paint . But I'am very proud to call you a friend. Tom Russell

This is a nice web site. I was in NKP as a mechanic for the Jolly Greens in 1969 -1970. We moved to Udorn in 70 where I finish my year out. Went to Shaw AFB and was there till I got out in 1971. I like to know if anyone one this site knows anything about David Bond who was a flight engineer at Da Nang?

Great site but was a little disappointed at the 'Peace time losses' link that took me back to The Jolly Green's page. That page hasn't been updated in ages and does have some errors in it. i.e: Dave Rech was not in the Barry Walls\Buddy Fortner crash in NM, I think he's still around somewhere.
I've tried to send names to them to no avail. i.e: John Sfier, Larry Leaming, Ron Fagan, all who perished in crashes.
This site you have here is a whole lot better than the Jolly Green. You even have the MAC Flyer article that made me famous, sort of.

Thanks for a great site! My brother was Lt. Ira Barilleaux (featured in photo of the 600th MARS Recovery mission) of the "Flying Oil Slick." He is now deceased, but was always proud of his service.

Sincere thanks to all our veterans and current service personnel.

Nice to see a lot of you "old" rotorheads are still alive and kicking. It was a great run and I wish we could all do it over again. LBRs were the pits but flying the HH-43 was really great. The heavies finally gave us a chance to get away from the home field and find out what real flying was all about. Great website.
Covey Campbell

From Nov. 1966- Nov. 1967 I was a pilot assigned to the 20th Helicopter Sqdn. at Udorn. Contrary to the article on the "20th Helicopter Squadron", under "Sites of nterest", all of the helicopters had been upgraded from C to D models( engine conversion) prior to my arrival.
